The Foreigner is an award-winning short film by Alethea C. Avramis. Filmed in Greece during the economic crisis, The Foreigner is a lighthearted comedy about a remote Greek village that must raise its population in order to avoid being cut off from the local government. When a foreigner, Eric, stumbles into town, the village mayor rallies the hostile townspeople to convince Eric to stay.
Produced by Babis Tsoutsas
Co-Produced by Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (Attenberg, Take Shelter, Before Midnight),
The Foreigner premiered at the prestigious Palm Springs International Shortfest in 2012 before going on to win a College Television Award (student Emmy) in the comedy category in 2013. Having enjoyed success around the world at film festivals, we are excited to bring this film to a larger audience!

A brilliant idea is transformed into a compact film that avoids an easy “touristic” solution in order to explore the heart of the matter.

Alethea Avramis’ Greek background is obvious when watching The Foreigner. A filmmaker without her cultural diversity could have never come up with something like this. Everything, from the story, the cast, the language to the direction and camera work is a beautiful and smooth cultural collision that one enjoys watching for the perfect balance it has somehow achieved.

The first generation Greek-American came to Greece without the contacts and funds but determined to shoot her last indie short film “The Foreigner” in Mani. In just a couple of months she managed not only to find the associates and the crew but also, in the midst of the financial crisis, to raise – mostly via the internet – the 20.000 dollars needed for the production of her half-an-hour comedy.
